What a channel drain is

A channel drain, also called a trench drain or strip drain, is a narrow channel set into concrete or pavers with a removable grate on top. Water running across the surface drops through the grate, flows along the channel and exits through solid pipe to an outlet.

It's built for surface water on hard surfaces. A French drain collects water from soil; a channel drain catches water that can't soak in at all.

Where Tulsa homeowners use them

  • Driveways that slope down toward a garage
  • Patios and pool decks that drain toward the house
  • The edge of a slab where concrete meets a low lawn
  • Walkways and side yards that funnel water to a door

How a channel drain is installed

  1. Find the flow line

The contractor watches how water moves across the concrete and places the drain across that path, usually at the low edge.

  2. Cut or form

On existing concrete, a strip is saw-cut and removed. On new pours, the channel is set before the concrete goes in.

  3. Set the channel

Channel sections are bedded in concrete at the right height so the grate sits flush or just below the surface.

  4. Pipe to an outlet

Solid pipe carries water from the channel's outlet to the street, a swale or a pop-up emitter downhill.

  5. Patch and test

Concrete is patched around the channel and the system is tested with a hose.

Tulsa specifics

Tulsa's heaviest rain days, about a dozen a year with an inch or more, can push a lot of water across a driveway in a short time. May is the wettest month, and heavy-rain days run from spring through fall. A channel drain has to be sized for those downpours, and its pipe has to reach an outlet with enough fall.

Many Tulsa driveways meet the street at the curb. If the outlet pipe has to go through the curb, parkway or sidewalk, that's right-of-way work, and inside city limits it needs a separate right-of-way permit. The city's Watershed Development Permit rules also cover excavating and paving. Ask your contractor whether your project needs a permit, or call City of Tulsa Development Services (311). Suburbs have their own rules.

Tulsa's Residential Site Plan Guidebook says properties must convey drainage "without causing damage to adjoining properties," and water can't be blocked from flowing onto your lot from uphill. A good plan carries water to the street or another approved outlet, never onto a neighbor and never into a sanitary sewer.

Oklahoma law requires anyone digging for hire to contact OKIE811 at least 48 hours ahead (excluding weekends and holidays). It's free. Sprinkler lines and other private lines aren't marked, so your contractor should plan for them.

Pros, cons and when it's the wrong fix

Pros: catches fast surface flow right where it causes trouble, works on surfaces that can't absorb water, and grates lift out for cleaning. Cons: it means cutting concrete, the channel collects leaves and grit, and a cheap grate can crack or rattle under a car.

It's the wrong fix when the real problem is soggy soil next to the slab (look at foundation drainage), or when roof water from a downspout is dumping onto the driveway (fix that with downspout lines). Sometimes the cheapest answer is redirecting a downspout before you cut any concrete.

Questions to ask

  • What width and depth of channel, and is it sized for heavy Tulsa rain?
  • Is the grate rated for car traffic if it's on the driveway?
  • Where does the outlet pipe go, and does it cross the curb?
  • How much concrete will be cut and how will it be patched?
  • How do I clean it, and is there a sediment basket?

Oklahoma doesn't issue a state license for general, landscape or drainage contractors. Plumbing, electrical and mechanical work does require a Construction Industries Board license. Ask any contractor for proof of liability insurance, and use a licensed plumber for anything tied into your home's plumbing.

Channel Drain FAQ

What's the difference between a channel drain and a French drain?

A channel drain is a grated channel set into concrete or pavers to catch surface water that can't soak in. A French drain is a gravel trench with perforated pipe that collects water from the soil and the surface of a lawn. Driveways and patios usually need channel drains; soggy yards usually need French drains or grading.

How much does a driveway channel drain cost?

Fixr's January 2025 figure for channel and trench drains is $30–$150 per foot, or roughly $3,000–$15,000 for a project. Concrete cutting and patching, grate quality and the distance to an outlet drive the number. These are published estimates, not quotes, so ask for the concrete work itemized.

Can a channel drain empty into the street in Tulsa?

Often the street is the logical outlet. But any pipe through the curb, parkway or sidewalk is work in the public right-of-way, and inside Tulsa city limits that requires a separate right-of-way permit. Ask your contractor whether they'll pull it, or call City of Tulsa Development Services at 311.

How do you maintain a channel drain?

Lift the grates a few times a year and after big storms, scoop out leaves and grit, and flush the channel and outlet pipe with a hose. Some systems include a catch basket at the outlet. Check that the grate stays seated so it doesn't rattle or crack under tires.
