What happens next

  1. Your request goes out

Your details go to independent drainage companies that serve your area. They aren't sold to unrelated marketers; see the privacy policy.

  2. Companies contact you

They reply by phone, text or email to ask questions and set up a site visit. Each company sets its own schedule, and we can't promise when, or whether, a company will respond. After a wet spring stretch, calendars fill up.

  3. You compare and choose

Get written quotes, compare them line by line, and hire whoever you trust, or no one. No fee and no obligation.

What helps companies quote accurately

A few details in the form save a round of phone calls and get the first number closer to the final one.

  • Where water collects. Side yard, back lawn, along the slab, at the garage door, in the crawl space, or across the driveway.
  • How long it stays after rain. A puddle gone by morning is a different problem from a lawn that stays soft for a week.
  • Roughly how big the area is. A guess in feet is fine, such as “a 40-foot strip along the fence.”
  • What the downspouts do. Do they dump at the foundation, run into buried pipes, or feed pop-up emitters that no longer pop?
  • Where water comes from. Uphill neighbors, the street, a roof valley, or nowhere obvious.
  • Anything in the way. Big trees, a sprinkler system, a fence, a patio or a driveway between the wet spot and the street.
  • HOA or creek nearby. If you have an HOA, or a creek or drainage channel behind the house, say so.

You don't need photos now. If a company wants them, they'll ask when they contact you, and photos taken during or right after a storm are the most useful.

Before the first site visit

A little homework makes the visit more useful and the quotes easier to compare.

  • Watch a storm. If you can, note where water runs and pools during heavy rain, not just afterward.
  • Find your plat and covenants. Check your HOA covenants and plat for drainage easements before regrading or trenching.
  • Know your sprinkler layout. Oklahoma law requires anyone digging for hire to contact OKIE811 at least 48 hours ahead (excluding weekends and holidays). It's free. Sprinkler lines and other private lines aren't marked, so your contractor should plan for them.
  • Ask about permits. Inside Tulsa city limits, the city's Watershed Development Permit rules cover excavating, grading and regrading, and any work in the street right-of-way (like running a pipe through the curb) needs a separate right-of-way permit. Ask your contractor whether your project needs a permit, or call City of Tulsa Development Services (311). Suburbs have their own rules.
  • Ask for insurance. Oklahoma doesn't issue a state license for general, landscape or drainage contractors. Plumbing, electrical and mechanical work does require a Construction Industries Board license. Ask any contractor for proof of liability insurance, and use a licensed plumber for anything tied into your home's plumbing.

No pressure. If you sign at home, the FTC Cooling-Off Rule generally gives you three business days to cancel, and Oklahoma law gives a similar right for financed home-solicitation sales. A fair quote will still be fair next week.
